otouto

OTOUTO - W.HILLIER (Dir. Alice Glenn) from two bright lakes on Vimeo.

These girls are adorable. I have slowed down with blog posts because I started an internship with Pegstar.net The other night Otouto played as support for Cocorosie. I really enjoyed the whole show but I was more than surprised with what the tall, pencil skirt wearing, aussi girls were doing and can't wait to put their album on repeat.

Bro. Steven

Bro. Steven is a side project from Scott Kirkpatrick of the band Chemic. In my opinion it shouldn't be his side project but who really knows where it will go. He recently released an EP on the ambitious 24-disc co-release with Crossroads of America Records and Flannelgraph Records titled the Laminar Excursion Monthly. They send you 3" compact disks. I hope Bro. Steven releases these tracks on another format but if not starting a 3" collection might be fun.

White Hinterland

I have been aware of White Hinterland for a few years. I first picked up her Philactory Factory album and thought that it was pretty fun. It didn't end up getting a ton of plays but I wasn't dissuaded from checking out her new LP. Kairos is a giant leap in the direction that I would have chosen for Casey Dienel's music. I loved the whispery swoonfulness on her previous album but I would trade it without question for the swanky seductress on these new tracks. This came out a few months back but I think this is just about the time to be listening to this one.

Badfoot Brown & The Bunions Bradford Funeral & Marching Band

While being educated on some of my roommates favorite music it was brought to my attention that Bill Cosby used to be a mega hip dude. I can't tell if it's supposed to be funny or for real, that hat in the first vid is definitely for real. Here is one more jam from that era:

Lately

Lately (Troisieme) - Memoryhouse Music Video from Malcolm Klock on Vimeo.

I caught memoryhouse and Twin Sister the other night here in Houston. I can't get this song out of my head. Through audio recording, live performance, and videography Evan and Denise have been able to transcend the beauty of their art tri-fold. I am not sure that they have had anything to do with the video production whatsoever but they pair very well and the music undoubtedly formed what was to be filmed. Here is another video, this one from Jamie Harley over at Schmooze-blog. The aesthetic prowess is stunning, amazing visuals and amazing music.

CVLTS

I can't decide if I am zoning out or zoning in when listneing to CVLTS. They have a digital release, LVST, out on AMDISCS available on tape or cdr with the option to download directly. There, the album is said to "fill into your brain sun-kissed hypnagogic synths through zoned out wandering for meeting yourself inside the universal soul behind the distorted cascades of sparkling reverbs seamlessly fluttering in the haze of purged eclipses permeating in subtle ways deep inside." I can't find a ton of information but as far as I can tell these are the same guys who designed all of that zany trapper keeper art. Well, maybe not but their tumblr might make you think so.

They have an upcoming release coming from Atelier Ciseaux titled "Black Hole, Hi Five." It will be a limited edition tape.

Shelia

I can't take credit for this one but it was put on in the same spot. I really love that venue. If you can imagine the astro dome shrunk down 100 times and surrounded by mirrors then you've got my alma mater's student union. The place was, for sure, weird and the people didn't "know" what was going on, but who does? The video makes me want to be there again and that is all that matters. Bradford Cox is Atlas Sound and so many other things. I am glad to have met him in mid central Indiana and hope to do so again, anywhere.

S. Carey

With my recent move to Texas I have had to come to some realizations. The most prominent of all being Texas can climb to temperatures unknown in my life before the move. This is upsetting to me because with this realization I am suspecting fall to be far different from the ones I had become accustomed to in the Mid-west. Music may be my salvation. I have been listening to S. Carey, original drummer of Bon Iver before the compromised addition of Matthew McCaughan, as he has transitioned from one percussion instrument to another, piano/keys being the latter. Starting next week at the Electric Fetus, a free show, he will be touring for his solo project All We Grow. If you are expecting all of the keywords of For Emma you will be let down. I don't believe he camped in a cabin or dealt with leaving a band or a long time lover but with some serious touring experience under his belt you can expect to see these songs performed at their best.

Here are a few tracks from the upcoming LP:

s.carey - Move

s.carey - In The Stream

I am Delighted

Sufjan with an unexpected EP release. I haven't had the pleasure of catching him live, if you want to here are his tour dates. The album is available for download here.

DannielRadall

Another product of AMDISCS, DannielRadall brings lo-fi experimental pop to a different plain. His album cover sets the feel with mom jean clad babes and Fierro dreams. I wish my parents were this cool.

These slow and seductive shoegazy jams come via mexican summer this fall. Her previous EP came with golden foil sleeve. The Waves tracks are for sure going to find their way to the my top of the year.

Sri Aurobindo

The Baltimore scene brings it. I said I didn't love that mixtape but found a few gems, well here is another one. It comes to me with a question I've been asking myself, why does Psychedelic rock feel throwback? The glory days always seem to outweigh the modern affairs, I suppose, but I think there are some bros pulling ranks in current times. Cave Paintings is one bridging the gap in my music catalog anyway. Below are a few tracks from his album. You can hear the rest/buy digital on their bandcamp; if there are any left you can get the LP here

Sri Aurobindo - Soul Vibrations om Man
Sri Aurobindo - Rest My Mind

WEEKENDS

I was cruising the web and found a compilation from a label called Friend Records out of Baltimore. I don't know anything about Baltimore, I've heard more of Annapolis. The comp was called Friends and Friends of Friends I didn't "love" it but the first track really grabbed me. Check out their album it's pretty great. Also they have a few tracks on their bandcamp.

unouomedude

AMDISCS is a generous label with a fairly large group of artists. They have many downloads available and they keep it real on Twitter. One of my favorite comes from unouomedude(you know you owe me dude) You can find more about him and pick up his Marsh EP directly from their site. He also has a bandcamp with a few bonus tracks.

unouomedude - buildings

TEEN INC.

I find myself thinking "What am I supposed to be building?" "What trial did I go through that deserves a montage because I will play this as the background music." "Did Johnny Five just cruise by?" Mad soothing jams for sure. Buy their 7"

DINOS FROM OHIO (aka laguna beach)

These waves have been bouncing around the web for a minute. I caught them on The Road Goes Ever On's most recent mix tape. They have a trident of free downloads on their bandcamp and they will seriously mess with your semi-circular canals and the vestibule. I personally suggest the trash castles EP and a kushy couch.

Charlyne Yi

Brent Dalton Clouse went to college with me. I saw him at a ton of the shows I put on and he is currently helping fill my size 13's. All humbleness aside, He has been having some rad opportunities lately. Most recently he got to work with Charlyne Yi doing the lighting for this music video.

COOLTAPES

I have only been aware of this guys tumblr since the spring but both seasonal mixtapes have been really "Cool" I highly suggest checking out the content that he posts and getting all of his mixtapes. Here is his SUMMMMMMER Mix and the Tracklist is available here

Bon Iver: April 3 2008, Taylor University

A few years back I had the privilege to book all of the concerts for my universities cultural enrichment organization. I wasn't always able to document things in the way that I wish I had, but most times someone else captured some photos or maybe even a video or two. The frustrating thing about this is that I hardly ever got a copy of said photo of video. Most of them would end up being lost on the inter-web and most often somewhere on facebook. Photos from facebook are always shrunk and copying them isn't even worth the time and until today I thought it was impossible to download a video. Much like the pictures even when copied the quality of the video is surely much less than it would have been if I'd received a physical copy but at least the sound is pretty descent.

I couldn't be more excited to share this with you. This was definitely my favorite show to host. Justin was so nice and it was pretty great to see him rise to the level he is today.

MISSING TOOF

Photobucket

Back when Blogging was relevant, I was really down with Missingtoof.com and all of their killer synthwave bloghouse jams. I have been contemplating everything radical about 8bit and reminiscing on the days of an OTCBuzz which has lead me to this tribute post. The question I have been asking myself has been, What would Missing Toof blog? Well here it goes:

COSMIC KIDS

Back in May the missing toof twitter posted about a party at The Well in Hollywood. One of the groups performing was none-other than the Cosmic Kids.

Mix #1 by cosmickids

This mix is pretty killer but it isn't really getting to the roots of the 14k diamond studded grill that once was Missing Toof, It's just missing something.

COMTRUISE

This is more like it:

Futureworld (WIP) by Com Truise

She melts - WIP by Com Truise

If you are into those tracks I suggest you pick up the Com Truise Cyanide Sisters EP. Oh yeah, it's FREE.

In it's day Missing Toof was a site that was way ahead of the game, I don't remember repeat content coming from their side of the blogosphere. But while they were mad skilled at posting fresh content they currently, to my knowledge, are NOT posting anything. I do believe I can say that if they were they would have beat everyone to this, but for today my final piece of music that pays homage to Missingtoof.com comes via Friendship bracelet a blogger you all should know.

Palm Yard

Remember when "fuzzy" described bears, or maybe even a bathing beauty's bronzing navel? Apparently it just isn't as cute when it come from Santa Cruz.

I don't usually dive head first into noise pop, or whatever the "clownin' on bitches" genre is but these guys have some serious jams. Light Socket caught my attention right away, And when paired with the track immediately after it, Breeze, These guys could have a great 7". But you're in luck, these bros just want to jam and invite you to the beach by offering their entire Craft Night tape for free.

He is always posting great content with cosmic write ups. Check him out and Check out Port City

Slow Animal

Somethings, some days, just need to be a little loud. This group is definitely that. Get their hazy beached out lofi jams for FREE

.

Captured Tracks

This really has to be one of the most promising labels out there. I would feel confident buying ANYTHING from them without even previewing it. Example:

They don't have a ton of content but I highly suggest keeping an eye out for future releases and get this 7" before it isn't available. You can hear both tracks on their myspace

Real Life Color

I couldn't stop talking about this band a couple of days ago. Their track "Darling" can be found here on their free LP - REAL LIFE COLOR

It has to be one of my favorite tracks of 2010 so far.

Guards

There is a pretty chill sound buzzing around. It's kind of grungy and it's pretty damn poppy. I can't put my finger on the vibe but it reminds me of what all the kids who used to get stoned and zone out to Arcade Fire are making in their basements. This group has been working with cults

, who I love, and have some really great tracks. Check out their Bandcamp

. Bandcamp is the future and Guards definitely have a place in it.
